World Cup 2026: US Crushes Paraguay 4-1 in Stunning Group D Opener

(MENAFN) The United States delivered a statement performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday, routing Paraguay 4–1 in their Group D opener at Los Angeles Stadium to instantly cement themselves as contenders.

The US needed just seven minutes to draw first blood, when Paraguayan midfielder Damian Bobadilla turned the ball into his own net attempting to clear a cross — a moment sparked by the relentless forward play of US midfielder Christian Pulisic, who was credited with the assist.

Striker Folarin Balogun then doubled the advantage in the 31st minute, finishing emphatically inside the box following yet another incisive run by Pulisic. Balogun was not done — he grabbed his second of the night before the break to send the US into halftime leading 3–0. The three first-half goals matched the total the Americans scored across their entire 2022 World Cup campaign.

Paraguay fought back in the 73rd minute through midfielder Mauricio, who scored his country's first goal of the tournament to make it 3–1. But any hope of a comeback was extinguished when substitute Giovanni Reyna sealed the rout at 90+8 minutes to restore a three-goal cushion.

The result propelled the US to the top of Group D, while Paraguay dropped to the foot of the standings.
