Intense gunfire reported close to presidential palace in Caracas
Footage circulating online shows armed personnel deployed around key government sites, accompanied by armored vehicles positioned near official buildings. Additional accounts describe loud explosions and the use of air-defense systems in the area. Authorities later indicated that “the situation is under control.”
Security forces reportedly opened fire after detecting unidentified drones flying above the presidential compound.
Military units were placed on high alert following the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken from Venezuela on Saturday and flown to New York. Both were subsequently charged with drug-trafficking offenses. In the aftermath, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, a close political ally of Maduro, was named interim president. She denounced the US operation as an “imperialist attack.”
Appearing before a US judge on Monday, Maduro rejected all accusations, describing himself as “a prisoner of war.” Foreign Minister Yvan Gil accused Washington of waging “a colonial war” aimed at seizing Venezuela’s natural wealth. “Today, it was Venezuela. Tomorrow, it can be any other country that decides to exercise its sovereignty,” he said.
The operation has also drawn condemnation from Russia and China, with Russian UN envoy Vassily Nebenzia labeling the raid “international banditry.”
