Heavy gunfire reported outside Miraflores presidential palace

(MENAFN) Reports indicate that intense gunfire broke out near the Miraflores presidential palace in Caracas on Monday, only days after President Nicolas Maduro was seized during a raid carried out by US Special Forces.

Footage circulating online shows heavily armed troops and armored vehicles positioned around key government facilities. Additional accounts describe explosions in the area and the activation of air-defense systems. According to sources cited by reports inside Venezuela, “the situation is under control.”

Those same sources said security units opened fire after unidentified drones were detected flying above the Miraflores compound.

The heightened military presence followed the capture of Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, who were taken by US commandos on Saturday and flown to New York. Both were later charged in connection with drug-trafficking allegations. In the wake of these events, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, a close ally of Maduro, was named interim president. She denounced the US action as an “imperialist attack.”

When appearing before a US judge on Monday, Maduro rejected all accusations, describing himself as “a prisoner of war.” Venezuela’s foreign minister accused Washington of launching “a colonial war” aimed at exploiting the country’s natural wealth. “Today, it was Venezuela. Tomorrow, it can be any other country that decides to exercise its sovereignty,” he added.

International reaction has also been swift, with both Moscow and Beijing condemning the operation. Russia’s representative to the United Nations described the raid as “international banditry.”
