Trump Calls Talk with Xi "Very Productive"
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump described a recent phone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping as "very productive," highlighting progress on several key matters, including trade, fentanyl, and the war in Ukraine, as well as a potential deal regarding TikTok’s U.S. operations.
"I just completed a very productive call with President Xi of China. We made progress on many very important issues including Trade, Fentanyl, the need to bring the War between Russia and Ukraine to an end, and the approval of the TikTok Deal," Trump posted on his social media platform following the call.
While Trump acknowledged the positive nature of the discussion, it remained unclear whether the deal for TikTok had officially been finalized. He also indicated that further talks were on the horizon: "The call was a very good one, we will be speaking again by phone, appreciate the TikTok approval, and both look forward to meeting at APEC!" he wrote.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, set to be hosted by South Korea on October 31, will provide a potential opportunity for face-to-face talks. Trump mentioned that he plans to visit China "in the early part of next year," with Xi expected to travel to the U.S. "at an appropriate time."
The future of TikTok in the U.S. had hung in the balance, with the app facing the threat of a ban unless its U.S. operations were sold to American firms. Last Wednesday, Trump postponed the deadline for TikTok’s ban for a third time, citing ongoing negotiations. The day before, Trump revealed that a "group" of American companies would be purchasing the social media app, though the identities of those companies have not been disclosed.
On the Chinese side, Xi responded cautiously, noting that Beijing was “clear” on the TikTok issue, though stopping short of confirming any finalized agreement on the sale. According to Chinese media, the Chinese leader emphasized that any business transactions should follow “market rules” and respect Chinese laws and regulations, balancing the interests of both countries.
Xi also reminded Trump of China's historical relationship with the U.S., urging against any unilateral trade restrictions. “The Chinese people will never forget the valuable support of the US and other anti-fascist allies during Chinese war of resistance against Japanese aggression,” he remarked.
Both leaders expressed optimism that their cooperation could result in mutual success and shared prosperity, benefiting both nations and the global community, according to Xi.
