UNRWA Chief Demands Israel’s Responsibility for Gaza Famine

(MENAFN) The leader of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has called on Israel to acknowledge its role in causing a severe famine in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement released Saturday, Philippe Lazzarini appealed to the Israeli government to end its denial regarding the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.

“It’s time for the Government of Israel to stop denying the famine it has created in Gaza,” Lazzarini declared on the U.S.-based social media platform X.

He further urged world powers to intervene urgently, emphasizing, “All of those who have influence must use it with determination and a sense of moral duty. Every hour counts.”

The latest data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a global hunger-monitoring system supported by the United Nations, confirmed on Friday that famine has been officially recognized in the northern Gaza governorate.

The report forecasts that the crisis is likely to expand into central and southern parts of the region by late September.

Since October 2023, Israel's military offensive has resulted in the deaths of more than 62,000 Palestinians, according to UNRWA.

The campaign has wreaked havoc across the territory, triggering widespread starvation, displacement, and outbreaks of disease.

In a significant legal development, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the assault on Gaza.

Additionally, Israel is currently facing a genocide lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning its military actions in the enclave.
