Media reports FBI raiding John Bolton’s house in national security investigation
According to the New York Post, which first broke the story, agents carried out the raids early Friday at Bolton’s residence in Bethesda, Maryland, and at his Washington, DC, office. Footage showed FBI personnel outside his properties loading items into vehicles, while Bolton was spotted in his office lobby speaking with agents in FBI vests.
The probe reportedly focuses on whether Bolton retained classified documents from his time in office, particularly material tied to his 2020 memoir The Room Where It Happened. The Justice Department under Donald Trump had tried to block publication of the book on national security grounds, though a federal judge allowed its release; the Biden administration later dropped related legal actions in 2021.
Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser for 18 months before being dismissed in September 2019, has not been arrested or charged. Neither the White House nor Bolton’s representatives have commented.
Attorney General Pam Bondi hinted at the seriousness of the case, posting on X: “America’s safety isn’t negotiable. Justice will be pursued. Always.” Her comment followed FBI Director Kash Patel’s statement that “no one is above the law,” which was amplified by Deputy Director Dan Bongino. Patel has previously branded Bolton part of the US “Deep State.”
The raid comes amid lingering tensions between Trump and Bolton, who often clashed on foreign policy. Upon returning to office earlier this year, Trump revoked the security clearances of more than 40 former intelligence officials, including Bolton, and stripped him of his security detail.
