China Kicks Off Construction of USD168 Billion Hydropower Megaproject
At a groundbreaking event held in Nyingchi city within the Xizang (Tibet) Autonomous Region, Premier Li Qiang officially launched the ambitious project, media reported.
Describing it as a "project of the century," Li emphasized the need to employ cutting-edge technologies, advanced equipment, innovative techniques, and superior materials to ensure high-quality construction and durable outcomes.
Upon completion, the hydropower complex is projected to produce an impressive 300 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually—more than triple the output of China’s current largest dam, the Three Gorges, which generates 88.2 billion kWh.
The development encompasses five interconnected hydropower stations, with a total planned investment of approximately 1.2 trillion yuan (roughly $167.8 billion), as stated by state-run outlets.
The launch ceremony drew a wide attendance, including government officials, engineers, and local residents, underscoring the strategic significance of the project for the nation.
According to media, this massive hydropower venture is expected to significantly advance China’s climate goals, supporting the country’s commitment to peak carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
