Zelenskyy Signals Possible Peace Talks with Russia Soon
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Saturday that Kyiv has initiated a new proposal to hold peace negotiations with Russia in the coming week.
“NSDC (National Security and Defense Council) Secretary (Rustem) Umerov also reported that he has proposed another meeting with the Russian side for next week,” Zelenskyy stated during his nightly video address.
Emphasizing the critical need to accelerate dialogue between the two nations, Zelenskyy called for discussions at the highest level to make tangible progress toward peace.
“Ukraine is ready for such a meeting,” he added.
Zelenskyy further noted that conversations are continuing with Russian representatives on the exchange of prisoners and the return of fallen soldiers. He confirmed that both parties are still implementing the outcomes of the previous negotiations held last month in Istanbul.
“Our team is currently working on another exchange,” he said, without disclosing further details.
While Russian officials have not publicly responded to Zelenskyy's statements, several Russian media organizations — including, a state-run news agency — reported that sources close to Moscow’s negotiating team confirmed receiving the proposal.
Following a Friday meeting with Umerov, Zelenskyy reiterated on X that there must be greater urgency in executing the agreements made during the second round of Istanbul peace negotiations, saying the process "needs more momentum."
Responding to Zelenskyy’s message, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the comments as a “positive signal” and said Moscow, too, supports efforts to reinvigorate the peace process.
Thus far, the two sides have conducted two direct rounds of peace negotiations in Istanbul, the most recent occurring on June 2, during which several key humanitarian arrangements were reached.
